A DATA SCIENTIST CANNOT GROW WITHOUT ORGANISATION’S SUPPORT

Data scientists cannot grow professionally if they do not have the support of the organisation they are working in. Mere mastering a few tools and techniques will enable them to make strides in their data science journey. Apart from the data science domain knowledge, aspirants should focus on company culture and the facilities that the firm provides for them to flourish. However, data scientists often randomly apply for jobs without evaluating the company, which they later repent. This not only causes hindrance in their career but also negatively impacts the organisation.

Since data scientists ignore such thought processes, Analytics India Magazine, every week, gets in touch with prominent data scientists for the weekly column My Journey In Data Science, where the data science leaders share their journey and also advise aspiring data scientists to guide them in the right direction for their growth.

For this week, we got in touch with Pronojit Saha, an advanced analytics practice lead at how hard is computer science. He has over 12 years of professional experience in various verticals like retail, healthcare and Industry 4.0. Pronojit shared his exciting journey in data science with AIM and spoke about the importance of working for the organisation that facilitates a robust data science platform for aspirants.

CMU Indian American Electrical Engineering Prof. Swarun Kumar Receives NSF CAREER Award

Carnegie Mellon University recently announced that a handful of its early-career professors were recipients of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, including Swarun Kumar. Kumar, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received a CAREER award for his work on low-power wide-area networks (LP-WANs).

LP-WANs are designed to provide a wireless network over a large area. Since many of these currently use a maintenance requiring battery, Kumar wants to find a better power source, according to the university. This new power source could provide wireless network to a larger area including, the Indian American researcher hopes, an entire city, it said.LP-WANs aim to provide wireless connectivity at extremely low data rates (kbps) over distances of several miles to devices powered by a 10-year battery.

Today's computer science vs engineering struggle to cope with the scale of future IoT deployments and the significant signal attenuation posed by urban environments. Kumar’s research lab, WiTech, has developed new solutions for allowing LP-WANs to scale more efficiently, achieve even longer range in urban settings and save battery life, including solutions that avoid a battery altogether, the research information states.

“We want all of our devices to be smart, everything around us, from the chairs we sit on, to the phones we use to communicate, to the bags we lug around everywhere,” says Kumar. “To achieve this vision, the fundamental question that needs to be addressed is, ‘How are we going to network these devices?’ All of today’s technologies, like cellular, Wi-Fi, and Internet don’t make the cut. The last link between your handbag and the internet does not yet exist.”

KinderCare adopts SD-WAN to support company growth and gains cost-saving insights

KinderCare Education is America’s largest provider of early education programs. With more than 1400 locations spanning more than 40 states, KinderCare serves 185,000-plus families in its programs every day. The company operates neighborhood childcare centers, corporate-sponsored centers for employee childcare, and before- and after-school care programs.

Until recently, KinderCare outsourced its IT department, but this arrangement no longer met the needs of the quickly growing company, according to Dennis Baker, Vice President, IT Technical Operations and Architecture. “As we transitioned into a growth organization, our leadership quickly realized that building internal technical capabilities was a strategic necessity,” says Baker.

One of the critical focus areas that Baker looked at was the network needs of the centers. “It’s a fairly large environment with so many computer engineer salary across the country, and our existing partner operated as a black box,” he says. “Our availability was a lot lower than we would have liked, and our costs were not really in line with the market. And I just think overall service wasn't really there. They just weren't very motivated to take care of us, despite our significant size. Aggregators often treat you like you're a prisoner, since they feel the effort to move on is too cumbersome for a customer to undertake.”

KinderCare started the process of doing an RFP for a new network, splitting it into two sections. One was only about getting cost-effective, reliable access with internet circuits. “We felt that our price overall for the circuits wasn't necessarily market competitive, so we wanted to bid the whole thing out. At first, we thought we'd likely bid it out to all the aggregators because it would be too hard to manage it ourselves,” explained Baker.

Best Computer Hardware Certifications 2020

Becoming a computer technician is a great point of entry into the IT field. In addition, computer hardware certifications can help demonstrate your knowledge and competency in maintaining computers, mobile devices, printers and more. Below, you'll find our pick of six computer hardware certifications to help you get your IT career off the ground.

Although we cover our computer science vs computer engineering salary, the idea that hardware can operate independently of software (or vice versa) isn't true. If you dig into the curriculum for any specific hardware-related certs in any depth, you'll quickly realize that software is in control of hardware.

Software comes into play for installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting and just about any other activity you can undertake with hardware. The hardware label simply indicates that devices are involved, not that hardware is all that's involved.

Differing factors, such as specific job role, locality and experience level, may impact salary potential. In general, hardware professionals can expect to earn somewhere in the mid-$60,000s. SimplyHired reports average earnings at $71,946 for IT technicians, with highs reported at almost $116,000. The average national salary for computer hardware technicians ranges from about $31,000 to more than $53,000. However, some certifications command higher salaries. Certification Magazine's "Annual Salary Survey" (Salary Survey 2018) average salaries for CompTIA Server+ at $98,060 and the A+ credential at $97,730.

Information Technology in Health Care M&A: The Top 3 Barriers to Achieving Maximum Value

Mergers and acquisitions in the health care industry present unique challenges that are not often present when undertaking similar transactions in other industries. Because of health care’s highly regulated nature, parties may falter if a health care transaction is not reviewed and negotiated carefully with respect to the distinct concerns that health care presents. This article discusses certain key considerations related to information technology that parties to a health care M&A deal should keep in mind as they contemplate and negotiate a transaction.

Information technology is utilized in all areas of a health care business and clinical operations. In most health care organizations, the underlying systems and technologies have been implemented over many years on a project by project basis, whereas an M&A integration program rapidly integrates these systems over the course of months. Designing an integration plan for health care M&A transactions requires the need for a deep understanding of how the systems and technologies are used and interfaced across all areas of this very complex environment (which includes more than just electronic health records, but also time clocks, accounts receivable programs, copiers, etc.). IT leaders should establish a programmatic approach to M&A planning to build an integration program that addresses the three primary pain points in computer science and engineering integration and ensure an organization can realize maximum value.

The intersection of compliance and third parties: How to stay compliant

When it comes to data security, ensuring your company’s compliance can be a headache, no matter the industry. Unfortunately, this problem is made even worse by the realization that compliance requirements extend beyond your internal operations. In other words, if your third-party vendors aren’t compliant, neither are you. To lighten your load a little bit, here’s a guide for those in the health, medical, and financial industries to help you make sure your vendors are as compliant as you are.

Instances of data breaches in the healthcare industry are skyrocketing, thrusting the field into the forefront of computer engineering salary discourse.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) form the foundation of the requirements that ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of physical or electronic personal health information (PHI/ePHI).

In other words, if a company handles PHI and/or ePHI, it is responsible for assuring HIPAA/HITECH compliance internally, as well as with any third-party vendors with access to personal health data. Insufficient data security measures are a real threat to medical patients around the country, as 56% of provider organizations have experienced a third-party or vendor breach.

In order to protect against third-party breaches, the HITECH Act introduced legislation in 2013 aimed specifically at regulating vendors under the larger HIPAA umbrella. In the legislation, vendors are referred to as business associates (BA). Anyone who has been granted access to PHI/ePHI, or if PHI/ePHI passes through their system, is required to comply with all HIPAA regulations. Before being granted access to PHI/ePHI, third-party vendors must sign a business associate agreement (BAA), which contractually binds them to HIPAA compliance.

Aviatrix’s Nauman Mustafa: Here’s How Network Architects Can Survive Cloud Transformation

Nauman Mustafa is VP of the solutions engineering and architecture group at Aviatrix. Before joining the company, he was the director and global technology adoption leader at VMware focusing on NSX, SD-WAN, and Kubernetes initiatives. He has also worked at Cisco for 12 years, doing everything from data center networking to security to voice, video, and network management. Here are his thoughts on the pitfalls of cloud implementation, the responsibilities of enterprises over their public cloud, and how traditional networking architects can become relevant in the new world of the public cloud.

Why does cloud transformation require enterprises to change their networking strategy and mindset?

The move to cloud for most enterprises has significantly accelerated over the past 12 months. What began as a DevOps-driven sandbox development environment for many enterprises is now serious business, driven top-down from the computer engineering definition and board of directors. The status quo is viewed as an existential threat to the businesses and change is driven from the leadership. The center of gravity for enterprise IT has moved out of the data center and into the cloud.

A Day in the Life of 4 Engineering Managers

For some engineering managers, leadership felt like a natural stepping stone in their career path. For others, like Clearcover Engineering Manager Joey Sabani, the path wasn’t quite so linear.

Sabani managed a restaurant in college, where the business acumen he acquired launched his journey toward management. Meanwhile, Reverb Director of Engineering Kyle Crum longed to find a role where he could provide the kind of guidance and support he gave while teaching English in Myanmar, so he eventually stepped into tech leadership.

Becoming an effective leader doesn’t happen overnight. People management requires developing soft skills and learning hard lessons from time spent as an individual contributor.

Tech team leads across Chicago agree that one of the key traits successful engineering managers have is the ability to listen. Managers should get to know their direct reports outside of their position, and keep an open ear to their concerns, challenges, and ideas. Managers can use empathy and open communication to create healthy environments that empower their engineers to do their best work, feel valued and advance their skill sets.

Network Automation: Commercial or Open Source?

In my last post, Automation Tools for Different Tasks, I discussed the differences in tasks that drive tool selection. But the array of options is confusing, with the question of whether to buy an expensive commercial product or build your own open-source solution being a big consideration. Is it better to buy an expensive commercial product or build your own solution around open source tools? What are the tradeoffs?

When doing your analysis, use a common operational framework – like my personal favorite, a model incorporating people, process, and technology (PPT) to drive action. People are the most important component of the framework in that smart network engineers can overcome deficiencies in process and technology. They can determine which technology to implement, how best to deploy it (process), and which technology and processes aren’t effective in a situation or for computer engineering jobs.

Next, you’ll have to determine who will own the tool and what skills they have. You’ll need multiple tool owners so that your organization isn’t handicapped when someone is on vacation, takes sick leave, or resigns. The skills to implement an open-source solution will be quite different from those required to deploy a commercial product. Both approaches necessitate learning new paradigms, but the details and skills are very different.

Google recognizes URI Computer Engineering professor with Faculty Research Award

They are created to make our lives easier – find us a cheaper price on a gallon of gas, warn us of traffic or an accident in our path and direct us to our location more quickly, locate the best value on milk and eggs – but in the digital age, crowd-learning apps are only as good as the usefulness of the information they collect and the speed with which they share it.

Bin Li, an assistant professor of electrical, computer and biomedical engineering at the University of Rhode Island’s College of Engineering, is all too familiar with the drawbacks of these types of crowd-learning apps and is working to make them better. I was recently one of a select group of academics worldwide to be recognized with a Google Faculty Research Award for his research in this area. In addition to funding tuition for a research assistant, the award program also facilitates collaboration with what jobs can you get with a computer science degree.

The highly competitive program supports world-class research in computer science, engineering and related fields at academic institutions around the world. This year, Google received more than 900 proposals from over 330 universities located in about 50 countries. After an extensive review process involving more than 1,100 reviewers across Google, about 15% of proposals received funding.

Why your brain is not a computer?

we are living through one of the greatest of scientific endeavors – the attempt to understand the most complex object in the universe, the brain. Scientists are accumulating vast amounts of data about structure and function in a huge array of brains, from the tiniest to our own. Tens of thousands of researchers are devoting massive amounts of time and energy to thinking about what brains do, and astonishing new technology is enabling us to both describe and manipulate that activity. We can now make a mouse remember something about a smell it has never encountered, turn a bad mouse memory into a good one, and even use a surge of electricity to change how people perceive faces. We are drawing up increasingly detailed and complex functional maps of the brain, human and otherwise. In some species, we can change the brain’s very structure at will, altering the animal’s behavior as a result. Some of the most profound consequences of our growing mastery can be seen in our ability to enable a paralyzed person to control a robotic arm with the power of their mind.

Every day, we hear about new discoveries that shed light on how brains work, along with the promise – or threat – of new technology that will enable us to do such far-fetched things as reading minds, or detect criminals, or even be uploaded into a how much do computer engineers make. Books are repeatedly produced that each claim to explain the brain in different ways.

And yet there is a growing conviction among some neuroscientists that our future path is not clear. It is hard to see where we should be going, apart from simply collecting more data or counting on the latest exciting experimental approach. As the German neuroscientist Olaf Sporns has put it: “Neuroscience still largely lacks organizing principles or a theoretical framework for converting brain data into fundamental knowledge and understanding.” Despite the vast number of facts being accumulated, our understanding of the brain appears to be approaching an impasse.

Ventures being prevailed upon by speed, adequacy of system computerization

GHD's attack into arranging mechanization wasn't conscious, however, it ended up being a distinct advantage. Five years prior, the worldwide expert administrations organization, which has 12,000 representatives and 260 areas around the globe, expected to include another 100 North American locales onto the system in light of a securing. Furthermore, time was of the quintessence.

C. Randy Taylor, the worldwide system supervisor for intrusion detection service, chose to get 50 of those destinations on the system utilizing conventional Cisco switches, switches, and remote innovation. It took a year and a half to execute those initial 50 destinations, and two professionals must be available on location to raise every one.

For the subsequent 50 destinations, Taylor adopted an alternate strategy. Rather than the Cisco items, Taylor and his IT group went with Riverbed Technology's SD-WAN item, which is a piece of the organization's SteelConnect arrangement. By utilizing SD-WAN, they cut the execution of the subsequent 50 destinations down to about a month and a half, and they didn't have to have a solitary professional on location.

"We were just searching for a simple to-send arrange arrangement instead of a mechanized arrangement," Taylor says. "From the outset, it was progressively about needing something that incorporated well with our other gear and was in reverse perfect with what we had set up. In any case, when we began utilizing SD-WAN, we found that in light of the robotization incorporated with it, we had the option to arrange everything in the cloud… It resembles we began with mechanization nearly unintentionally."
