India’s flawed electronics engineering education

I was a member of the Quizzing Society of one of India’s premier private technology institutions. Our fund-deprived club cherished a hand-me-down buzzer-set as our sole valuable possession until one day it became dysfunctional.

Appalled by the repair-price demands, I pitched the idea of repairing it ourselves. However, every single electronics engineer in the club promptly turned down my suggestion.

It was not until years later that I realized that contrary to what I thought then, they were quite reasonable in doing so. Their cold reception didn’t deter my overenthusiastic self from referring to a number of websites, manuals, and video tutorials on similar circuits, to little avail, except perhaps for noting the fact that the instructors were seldom Indian. With a bruised ego, I soon gave up the pursuit. 

Evaluating the consequences of the anti-China social-media outrage in the wake of a series of border confrontations, alleged encroachments, and diplomatic standoffs, computer engineering vs computer science in on the viability of the non-existent alternatives, I wonder if this futile pursuit will leave us Indians exhausted and with bruised egos.

TU’S Engineering School Develops “CovidNont”, an Application to Fight

Thammasat Engineering School (TES), Thammasat University has developed “CovidNont”, an easy-to-use QR code, tracking application to help prevent the spreading of COVID-19 in Nonthaburi. The app can be downloaded on both iOS and Android.

Asst. Prof. Thira Jearsiripongkul, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Cholatee Yangtrong, Deputy Governor of Nonthaburi, Mrs. Nisakorn Witsakorn, Deputy Governor of Nonthaburi, Panus Soponpong, M.D., Chief Nonthaburi Provincial Public Health Officer, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nonthaburi Provincial Public Health Office and Faculty of Engineering Thammasat University in a digital development project to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The application is a co-project between Faculty of Engineering, led by Dr. Choompol Boonmee, Lecturer at the Electrical Engineering Department, and Nonthaburi Provincial Public Health Office.

“The idea for application CovidNont, developed by the faculty of Engineering and Nonthaburi Provincial Public Health Office,  started from the fact that there are a lot of people infected with computer science and engineering and by lifting the lockdown policy, it becomes important to be able to track the activity in each place, because if someone is infected, we should be able to check where had the patient been to, and who also has a risk of being infected. After that, the idea was discussed with Dr. Choompol and then starts developing the application with Nonthaburi Provincial Public Health Office,” says Asst Prof Thira.

WEAKENING PULSE OF ENGINEERING STAFFING MARKET

SIA recently published its May 2020 Pulse Survey Report, which captured April’s performance of participating firms and the impact of Covid-19 across US staffing segments. The survey is a useful tool for staffing firms to identify shifting trends in the market and to gain insights on how peers are operating during this period. The Pulse Survey is normally conducted bimonthly, but due to global events, it has run monthly since March.

Survey respondents reported a median 18% year-over-year decline in their US temporary staffing revenue in April, a further decrease from the 5% reported decline in March. Firms with engineering staffing as their primary segment reported a median decline of 10% year over year. While the May Pulse Survey sample size is not large enough to perfectly reflect the engineering staffing industry, it does at least how hard is computer science suggest that engineering staffing is faring worse than other professional staffing segments, notably IT staffing (down 4% year over year) and marketing/creative staffing (down 3%).

State defers CET for engineering, pharmacy, architecture

The state common entrance test (CET) cell on Monday announced that entrance exam for admissions to engineering, pharmacy and architecture colleges in Maharashtra has been postponed till further notice. The tests were supposed to be conducted between July and August. In a tweet, state minister for higher and technical education Uday Samant announced that new dates will be announced soon.

“Conducting entrance exams for professional courses is important. Looking at the current situation of Covid-19 in our state, we have decided to push the exam date till further notice,” computer engineering definition.

Close to 5.24 lakh students registered for the entrance exams this year. Earlier this month, around 60,000 applicants had changed their examination centres after CET cell provided the option of picking centres closer to students’ home.

Achievement isn't why more men are majoring in physics, engineering and computer science

While some STEM majors have a one-to-one male-to-female ratio, physics, engineering and computer science (PECS) majors consistently have some of the largest gender imbalances among U.S. college majors -- with about four men to every woman in the major. In a new study published today in the peer-reviewed research journal, Science, NYU researchers find that this disparity is not caused by higher math or science achievement among men. On the contrary, the scholars found that men with very low high-school GPAs in math and science and very low SAT math scores were choosing these math-intensive majors just as often as women with much higher math and science achievement.

"Physics, engineering and computer science fields are how to become a computer engineer attracting and retaining lower-achieving males, resulting in women being underrepresented in these majors but having higher demonstrated STEM competence and academic achievement," said Joseph R. Cimpian, lead researcher and associate professor of economics and education policy at NYU Steinhardt.

3 questions with James H. Williams, Jr., professor of mechanical engineering

In two new textbooks, Professor of Mechanical Engineering James H. Williams, Jr. shares his engineering knowledge, joy, and teaching style that have inspired generations of MIT students as well as engineers and scientists worldwide. As a mechanical engineering professor, Williams is the first to receive the Everett Moore Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the first to receive the Jacob P. Den Hartog Distinguished Educator Award, and the first to be named a MacVicar Faculty Fellow. He is also the first MIT professor to be named the School of Engineering Professor of Teaching Excellence.

The initial textbook, “Fundamentals of Applied Dynamics,” is a lightly edited and rededicated publication of the celebrated original version from 1996. The second textbook is entitled “Wave Propagation—An Introduction to Engineering Analyses.” The books were published simultaneously, a decision that Williams attributes to the “computer engineering jobs” of MIT Press Director Amy Brand. Autographed copies of both books have been sent to Dame Sally C. Davies, Master of Trinity College, University of Cambridge, for placement in the Wren Library.

Engineering change for Walkinshaw Andretti United

With staffing limited for the Sydney Motorsport Park round – just 13 team members are permitted per two cars including drivers – the Holden squad has opted for a tweak to its engineering team.

Terry Kerr will be Bryce Fullwood's engineer, replacing Rob Starr, with Adam De Borre continuing on Chaz Mostert's car and Carl Faux overseeing both entries.

Starr will be workshop-based for the time being.

Kerr was on-hand for Fullwood's Toyota Racing Series test earlier this month, which marked the young driver's first laps since the Thursday of the cancelled Australian Grand Prix.

Reflecting then on the upcoming resumption of the Supercars season, Fullwood said the unexpected three-month break may help, rather than hinder, his rookie campaign.

"It was no secret that for me going into Adelaide I was very what jobs can you get with a computer science degree," he told Motorsport.com.

"The two weeks before Adelaide was so busy, trying to move myself from Queensland down to Melbourne. A lot of things weren't racing-related, it was just part of life and moving and all of that. So I wasn't training anywhere near as much as I wanted to, because I was flat stick.

Aspire to study engineering? List of scholarships

A Day in the Life of a Robotics Engineer

In my freshman year of high school, I went to a Women in Technology camp. We got exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering. Then, we got to do robotics! We got to use industrial robots that are used in factories around the world. I fell in love and decided I wanted to be a Robotics Engineer.

I got my Mechanical Engineering degree with the Robotics option at Lake Superior State University in addition to an associate’s degree in Computer Science. I had two internships when I was in college. During both, I got to work with robots, which solidified computer science vs computer engineering career interest. For one internship, I installed two robots and helped debug the system. For the other internship, I worked with the same robot type at a sealant company. I was able to do different lab tests and make videos for buyers. The videos showed different equipment types and capabilities so buyers knew what the products could do for their company.

After I graduated and worked for a couple of years, I got my master’s degree in Integrated Manufacturing Systems Engineering from North Carolina State University. In other words, I studied combined mechanical and electrical systems in a manufacturing environment.

Chemical Engineering Prof At IIT Madras Who Runs Marathons And Writes Blogs

While the number of women aspiring to make a career in STEM is on the rise, we are yet to see equal representation in college classrooms, especially at coveted institutes such as ITTs of India whose corridors still remain heavily male-dominated. One of the many ways to change dynamics of gender here is by striking inspiration among young girls and bringing them stories of women who broke glass-ceilings in science or simply worked their way up with determination and talent to have successful careers.

Outside of history books, India has numerous women researchers and professors in the present who represent modern-day women of STEM in India. One such woman is Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Department of entry level computer science jobs, IIT Madras.

A marathon runner and blogger, Prof. Aghalayam talks with SheThePeople.TV on the biases that women in science have to deal with and how our society needs to be more open to the idea of young women making their own choices. Retired Surveys Division head, jobs with computer science degree Carson was an instructor in the Civil Engineering Department from 1971-1973. After that, he began with ARDOT as staff location engineer for the Surveys Division. After more than 40 years with ARDOT, Carson retired in 2013.

Ransomware attack hits ST Engineering’s USA aerospace unit

ST Engineering’s aerospace subsidiary in the USA suffered a data breach, after being hit by criminal ransomware attack.

The incident at VT San Antonio Aerospace involved a cyber criminal group known as the Maze group gaining unauthorised access to its IT network and launching a ransomware attack. ST Engineering says that investigations are ongoing.

It adds: “At this point, the ongoing investigation indicates that the threat has been contained and is believed to be isolated to a limited part of ST Engineering’s commercial operations in the [USA].”

Singaporean broadsheet The Straits Times, citing cybersecurity firm Cyfirma, reported that hackers exfiltrated about 1.5 terabytes of data from the computer engineering vs computer science, which could have been stolen as early as in March.

ST Engineering adds that its IT network in Singapore, where it is headquartered, is not affected by the cyberattack, and that its other businesses are not compromised. It has also stepped up cybersecurity measures within the group, while VT San Antonio Aerospace has began notifying potentially affected customers.

Nine women to watch from U of T Engineering’s class of 2020

One graduate designed tiny robotic scissors controlled by external magnetic fields using a joystick – no cables, wires or any other attachment required. Another used her passion for what can you do with a computer science degree to help protect nuclear power plants from threats.

And one grad – in a new collaborative engineering education specialization offered by the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education – was a medal-winning, world-class runner who competed at the Pan Am Games in Toronto as well as in Venezuela, Qatar and Spain.

They are just three of the nine women who appeared on the faculty’s “Grads to Watch 2020” list – each selected by their home department or institute.

In the UK, the Building Engineering Services Association and the Electrical Contractors Association have collaborated on new safety guidelines which cover working in environments where there is a high-risk of computer science engineer salary transmission as well as safety precautions for carrying out essential work in closer proximity than two metres.
