A more quantum-literate workforce is needed

 STEM degrees remain valuable, but as the field grows, companies also want candidates who understand quantum information science and technology concepts, a new study finds. A new study is providing guidelines for how colleges and universities can update their curricula to incorporate quantum computing to prepare for the expected wave of jobs.Researchers from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and the University of Colorado Boulder suggested steps that need to be taken after interviewing managers at more than 20 quantum technology companies in the US.

The finding from the interviews is that those graduating with bachelor's degrees in physics may lack the skills they need to enter the quantum workforce, computer science vs computer engineering salary said. Roughly 20 years after it threatened to break up Microsoft for abusing its monopoly power, the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) has launched antitrust proceedings against Google. The charges against Microsoft then and Google today are disconcertingly similar: The use of monopoly power to exclude potential rivals from gaining a foothold in the market, also known in competition law as “exclusionary conduct”.

In what was one of the most celebrated antitrust cases of its time, the computer science and engineering in 1998 accused and found Microsoft guilty of using its considerable muscle in the operating system (OS) market to effectively destroy Netscape Navigator in the browser market. Microsoft did this by bundling its own browser, Internet Explorer with its Windows OS and “refused to deal” with any computer hardware manufacturer who dealt with the now-defunct Netscape. Microsoft’s almost complete dominance of the OS market at that time meant that no serious hardware manufacturer had the nerve to challenge it.

BT launches software-defined network services with VMware's SD-WAN the first offering

 BT announced it has launched a new generation of cloud-optimized managed services with the first offering based on VMware's SD-WAN technology.

VMware's VeloCloud SD-WAN technology gives customers a single view of their networks as well as a choice of management controls. Traditional wide area networking (WAN) required dedicated, proprietary vendor hardware to be installed at each customer site. BT’s new managed service is based on generic hardware that's capable of supporting a choice of software-based networking solutions from different vendors.

BT’s service is using Vmware technology for the orchestrator and software, including its cloud on ramp capability in order to deliver the service to its customers.

The VMware SD-WAN service can be managed or co-managed remotely by BT on its new digital service platform. BT is also offering its customers consultations with its experts to find the best solution to fit their needs. They can also provide advise on security to meet each customer's security requirements.

Over the past year or so, organizations have been migrating their SD-WAN services from the initial "do-it-yourself" (DIY) model to managed SD-WAN services. Other service providers, such as Orange Business Services, and Windstream, are also offering their customers white-glove managed SD-WAN services that deliver a variety of high-level service benefits, including a single pane of glass, technical consulting resources and advanced service delivery.

“Our new managed service further expands customers’ choice of software-defined networking solutions. Presently available with industry-leading how hard is computer science SD-WAN, it is delivered over our new, digital service platform," said BT's Andrew Small, director of global portfolio, in a statement. "The solution is fully supported by our consultancy services to help customers maximize the benefits of performance, agility and flexibility for their businesses."

BT didn't say what vendor, or vendors, it used to build its cloud-first, scalable network for the software-defined networking services.

Military leader says cyber engineering is critical to the nation’s future

 As our physical and digital systems become increasingly integrated, cybersecurity is an issue that should be on the radar of all engineers, says Australia’s Head of Information Warfare. 

“Cybersecurity and cyber resilience are cross-disciplinary challenges that require a truly cross-disciplinary response from the engineering profession,” Major General Marcus Thompson AM FIEAust CPEng told create. 

“There are engineers working in computer engineering salary, in cyber operations and on the cyber resilience of the government, of organisations within industry.

“Put all that together — engineers are working on the cyber resilience of the nation.”

NETWORKING FROM HOME: PRATT STUDENTS LEAD DISCUSSIONS WITH INDUSTRY LEADERS

 With an uncertain job market and the disruption of the workplace due to the pandemic, recent graduates have faced a formidable first year of their post-college careers. In supporting Pratt Institute’s 2020 graduates, the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) has involved students and alumni in a range of online programming to facilitate networking and professional development. These initiatives have put the students at the center, empowering them to lead conversations about the interests, ideas, and questions that they want to pursue in their careers. 

One of these programs was Talk Now which CCPD ran over the summer and was aimed at graduating seniors. It was organized by and for these newest Pratt alumni to hear what was happening in their industries first-hand, with a goal of inspiring them to tackle the challenge of beginning a practice during a pandemic. “They were graduating and an issue was that they were not getting to meet professionals to talk,” said Deborah computer science degree jobs, associate director of career development and engagement. “Online, they were getting to meet them in a way they never could before, where they’re in their homes working.” 

The series was eventually expanded to include all students beyond just the 2020 graduating class, with almost 300 students attending conversations with about 130 employers from a variety of disciplines. The students helped identify the professionals who were invited and led all of the discussions, which ranged from portfolio development to the future of work, taking advantage of the virtual platform to make the dialogues international. Each event was intimate, with small group sessions held over Zoom, and the students and professionals had the opportunity to stay connected afterward.

Aruba Vs. Cisco Intelligent Edge Face-Off, Why Aruba ESP Is Smarter: Keerti Melkote

 Aruba founder and President Keerti Melkote told CRN that rival Cisco lacks the artificial intelligence muscle to compete against Aruba’s Edge Services Platform.

“What we compete against on a day in and day out basis is either Meraki or Cisco DNA, but the reality is neither one of them solve the problem the way we do,” said Melkote. “They don‘t have AI . Neither system has AI at the heart of it.”

Aruba’s cloud-native AI and security capabilities built into its unified edge to cloud ESP platform is in sharp contrast to Cisco’s multi-product edge to cloud offering, said Melkote.

“They don’t have the AI and security capabilities that we believe is fundamental to this ESP vision,” he said. “Automation is at the heart of it. And automation with AI is the bet we made on ESP. That piece Cisco simply does not have: neither in computer engineering jobs or DNA.”

The breakthrough Aruba ESP is an intelligent edge to cloud central nervous system of sorts that can analyze data across edge, wired and wireless networks, identify any issues or abnormalities and self-optimize with its AI capabilities.
