New interdisciplinary atmospheric physics and computer science project at Mainz University

The Big Data in Atmospheric Physics (BINARY) project at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has been granted EUR 1.5 million in funding by the Carl Zeiss Foundation. The basic idea of this interdisciplinary project that unites atmospheric physics and computer science is to apply state-of-the-art methods of statistical data analysis and machine learning to various scientific problems in atmospheric physics. Researchers from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics and the Institute of Computer Science at JGU are involved. The project was launched in March 2020 and is coordinated by Professor Peter Spichtinger from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics. Thanks to improvements in measurement technology and enormous increases in computing power, atmospheric physics - like many other natural sciences - has seen a huge increase in the amounts of data. However, analyzing these data using conventional methods has become difficult or even impossible. At the same time, our understanding of the intricate physical processes that occur in the atmosphere is still relatively poor as this is a highly complex system in which processes take place on many different scales - from the formation of microscopic ice crystals in the air to the development of thunderstorms. Indeed, many of the fundamental processes are still not fully comprehended while their effects on the system as a whole remain unclear.

Humanities, social sciences to be included in GATE

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), the exam through which IITs and many other institutions admit students to postgraduate and research programmes, will include subjects from humanities and social sciences (HSS) and environmental studies from next year.

The move will make research scholars from these streams eligible for the monthly GATE fellowship of Rs 12,400 from the human resource development ministry. It is also expected to boost the degree and research studies in HSS at the tech schools, said Prof. difference between computer engineering and computer science, the organising chairperson of GATE.

Several public sector undertakings also consider the GATE score for recruitment, so HSS students will get placement benefits too, Choudhury said.

AT&T takes its 5G wireless network nationwide as evolution to super-fast connections continue

AT&T says its 5G network now is officially nationwide.

The wireless provider Thursday announced 5G coverage reaching 395 markets across the U.S. covering 205 million people.

AT&T hoped to achieve nationwide coverage during the first half of the year, but the coronavirus crisis pushed back its plans slightly. As of last month, AT&T's reach was 355 markets and 179 million people.

AT&T has achieved its coverage with a mix of 5G technology. Super-fast millimeter wave signals, which can be five times the speed of current 4G signals, are available in parts of 35 markets, the company says. Making up the rest of the network are so-called "computer engineer vs computer science" signals, which travel farther and provide more reliable, robust coverage but deliver speeds similar to current connections.
